Proud of our past, committed to our future
Mitcham Historical Society Inc
History
Mitcham Village was surveyed in 1840, making it one of the oldest European settlements in South Australia. The local Council was formed in 1853, the first outside the Adelaide CBD, and is one of the oldest councils in Australia.
Formed in 1977 as a sub-group of Mitcham Village Arts and Crafts Association, the Society worked to achieve designation of Mitcham Village Historic Conservation Zone, the appointment of a Local History Officer and formation of the Mitcham Heritage Research Centre. In 2007 a new chapter began, with separate incorporation and a new determination to protect and stimulate interest in local heritage.
The Society played a major role together with the Brownhill Creek Association in stopping the damming of Brownhill Creek, in saving the historic Waite Gatehouse from demolition and has contributed to the Kaurna shelter tree project in Brownhill Creek Recreation Park, the maintenance of the historic stables (scout hall) in Maitland Street, and the Tom Price Memorial.
